10 Reasons Why PODs are Great Idea for Bitcoin Mining

You can mine some crypto coins in a small place with ASICs or RIGs, however, in terms of large-scale mining like crypto farms, PODs are the ones that could raise the bar to another level due to their simplicity and resourceful design.

This clever idea starts with an empty container adapted or better yet, tailor-made, retrofitted for each customer to meet the wide range of their different types of machines and local needs.

PODs can be targeted for a large or small company that is seeking new ways to invest in the crypto-mining industry in the smartest way possible. This can be done while reducing costs at the same time by taking advantage of the amazing POD engineering and ease of adaptation. The time they take to be built is from 4 to 8 weeks, which is an amazing time frame if we take into consideration that every customer has different needs depending on the location, weather, and intended use.

Therefore, in its primary stage is an empty 40-foot ISO modular container that is redesigned to accommodate over 1MW of power for crypto mining hardware.

PODs are made out of steel, which makes them perfect for tough environments and at the same time cheaper and faster than building a place that needs planning or previous design structures and regular construction materials. Plus, in case you need to switch locations for any circumstance, you just call the flatbed truck and a crane to pick it up and it’s ready to go hashing somewhere else.

The quality of the PODs components is no joke, they are made with the best top-notch products out in the market, so let’s peek inside of them and find out the 10 reasons why PODs are the smoothest investment for crypto miners.

1) Airflow: A vital aspect to have in mind when these devices are built is the airflow. For example, Bit5ive’s PODs layout, engineering, and fabrication are aimed towards a positive pressure, fresh airflow with no hot points. This design consists in extracting the air through the crypto mining hardware and then not recycling that same air, by using a barrier that prevents hot air from mixing with the fresh air intake. This is achieved by using custom fabricated insulation sheets.

2) Electric components: Speaking in electric terms, all the components are certified, UL listed, and American-made to ensure proper high performance and the ease to be plugged and play ready, which nowadays is an expected feature to be met if we’re speaking of saving time. Once the previously fabricated container reaches its location you just need to connect a particular phase from a transformer to the main breakers that are on the outside of every POD.

3) Power Cables: These are also heavy-duty, and all the switching gear and cables are proven efficient operation over time and usage. The power distribution units (PDU) are industrial steel-cased units that are made to work in rough conditions, and they might differ depending on the customer’s necessities and environments.

4) Floors: Another component is the Diamond Plate rubber matting, made from SBR rubber which stands for Styrene Butadiene Rubber, a tough and long-wearing synthetic rubber. It helps to reduce the static electricity created and works as an insulator as well. This type of floor mat is both tough and rugged, which provides safety and a very neat appearance.

5) Racks: Moving along, we have the racks, made from rugged steel shelving and super-strong roll-formed steel framing with positive interlocking beam, and post connections for easier assembly. On the back of the racks, there are polystyrene insulation sheets with cutouts for the output airflow fans from the mining devices. This rack design also avoids the crypto miners being stacked or placed next to each other. This provides higher efficiency and longevity for the mining devices and a better air flow.

6) Network: With the above details covered let’s move on and check out the network feature that comes pre-designed from the factory and features with static to the ports for each corresponding placement spot on the racks. However, the client can also choose to set that up on their own if they wish to. A properly organized network enhances the maintenance and repair time if needed!

7) Monitoring System: The PODs have a server computer and a tablet PC connected to a monitoring center. The tablet PC is placed on a swivel bracket to display the network map for the POD. This feature allows you to quickly identify a specific miner device that isn’t operating as it should and gives you updates by reporting connectivity and hash rate for each device. Finally, the server PC handles the data to be displayed by the PMS (POD Monitoring System).

8) Cooling System: We cannot forget to mention the detailed cooling system design. It works with pressurized fresh airflow that provides enough CFM to keep the mining hardware away from overheating with 4 industrial heavy-duty direct drive exhaust fans. These fans are less prone to have energy losses, they’re easy to clean and less noisy than belt-driven fans.

PODs cooling system forces the fresh air to flow through each mining device, lowering its internal temperature and not recycling the output air back inside. There is also a smart evaporative cooler so the humidity and fresh air temperature can be monitored and lowered by 10° to 30° Fahrenheit, ideal for hot summers and dry-air locations.

The evaporative cooler tank features a water flow valve. It needs to be connected to a constant water source to refill the water previously evaporated in the process. Of course, this system might need cleaning and maintenance depending on the area and weather.

PODs fans also have VFD (variable-voltage/variable-frequency drive) meant to control the operation and speed of each one of them. The CFM and pressure are controlled and constantly measured. With this feature you’ll be able to have the total input of air to regulate the internal temperature of each miner. Now that’s what you call customization!

9) Safety: In terms of safety & security, PODs come with built-in 2 keyed door locks and a ring camera. The louvered doors have a lock that works with the same key, and the main doors have their own identical set of keys. At this point, clients can also choose to enhance security by their own means.

There is also a man-door entry, a wide-centered cold island, 3ft. spacing from the electrical panel enclosures, and a reinforced steel plate for the step-down transformer. A vital thing is that the main breaker that feeds each service is placed on the exterior at the back of the container shell. This might be handy in case of emergency because it allows the technicians to turn the POD off from the exterior.

10) Shipping: Finally, the shipping part. As I mentioned before you just need a crane and a flatbed truck to transport the POD to the desired location. Some locations might need some form of groundwork to hold them in place, the POD weight is around 15,500 lbs.

PODs are the present and future in terms of infrastructure in the crypto industry. That’s the reason why many big players are moving from old fashion brick-and-mortar buildings to something simpler, faster to build, and easier to relocate. The future of crypto mining is modular.
